Togi Charcoal BBQ & Salad Bar

Togi Korean Restaurant at Mosque Street is a quite popular Korean restaurant deemed to be authentic by diners. Recently the restaurant opened a new outlet at TripleOne Somerset, adding the BBQ options to the menu (hence the name).

After a long day of shopping and heavy brunch earlier on the day, my friend and I agreed on having spicy Korean food as dinner. Togi has been on my list of Korean restaurant at Orchard to try, so we went ahead. We were there at around 6pm on a Sunday, and there are still few tables available without reservation. But to be safe, do place a reservation prior to coming in. I personally like the ambient of the restaurant. White themed with high ceiling, and some green leaves decorations at the ceiling.

We were pretty hungry and completely forgotten about the banchan, so we ordered the Kimchi Jeon ($12), Sundubu Jjigae ($12), and Japchae ($15) for the two of us. The Korean rice tea options were either hot or cold, free flow at $1 per person.

We were slightly disappointed when presented with the banchan. There were seven varieties: mushrooms, kimchi, edamame, mashed potato, fishcake, anchovies, porridge. We have never seen South East Asian fishcake and edamame being served as banchan in a Korean restaurant. The banchan were quite tasty, but not mindblowing. Only if there were more varieties.

I really like the Japchae, although it was slightly too oily, and the beef is minced instead of sliced. The look might not be too appealing, but the rule of not judging the book by its cover applies this time.

I was slightly disappointed by the look of the Sundubu Jjigae when it was served. The broth was not smooth but instead had lots of coagulation. However, it tasted surprisingly good. The salt, sweet, and heat combination were perfect although I would prefer more heat. And of course and oozing egg on top instead of buried in a pool of tofu and scallions.

We were too full to finish the pajeon, but I would say that the Kimchi Jeon is one of the better pajeon that I have ever tasted. The outside is perfectly crisp, and the inside is soft but not too doughey like other pajeon. Beware, if you are not a hardcore kimchi lover, go for the seafood option, Haemul Pajeon.

Dining at Togi was a very pleasant experience. Although the food did not blow my mind, the service was perfect. Our waiter is a very friendly lady who has a died hair and bangs. She smiled all the time and was very passionate. Also, we never once had to worry about our tea being refilled. The older man in charge of tea refilling always came to our table to fill up our tea. I would definitely return to try the stew for sharing.
